Im just looking at gameplay from Uprising and trying to compare it to other games that I have played to think about what I like and don't like about Dust and its become blaringly obvious that the reason I stick with this game has nothing to do with the actual game itself and more to do with interesting lore, mechanics, and so forth.
I mean the lore of EVE, and by extension Dust is incredible, so much player created content, a universe that has its own current events, ancient histories and races, item desciptions, etc.
More so than this the potential of the DUST/EVE link is nearly limitless when it can get implemented on a meaningful level, so that both sides of the divide can see what they are getting and what we can offer.
I looked into Planetside 2 today because I knew it was coming to the PS4 and while it is most definitely not my favourite shooter of all time (due to overly stylised character models) what I did notice was how it was played. Massive amounts of players working with massive amounts of vehicle support, using various tactics (squad based, platoon based, company based), as well as generally less laggy servers and relatively smooth movement and aim mechanics.
This is what I thought Dust would be. MMO (Massively Online Multiplayer) FSP but what we have not is 16 vs 16 which is not massive at all. MAG had up to 128 players working smoothly in a single massive battle map with rolling objectives that could change hands and become the centres of huge brutal fire fights, en masse charges, vehicular blockades and bombardments, etc. Planetside 2 had all of this. Massive number of players in close proximity, exterior objectives, cover, and utility structures as well as building for interior combat, bunkers, and much much more.
Basically what I feel like is that this game as entertaining and enjoyable as it can be sometimes doesn't quite live up to the hype that we probably imagined it would all those years ago. I remember being really excited when I saw Dust 514's trailers and closed beta release. While the initial few months were great, getting into corps, making allies and friends, building a character there isn't enough to keep long term players around.
I mean I just hit the 7m SP "competitive level" and all im doing is what Ive always done. I could pick this game up in 6 months time, re adjust myself to the controls and get back into it, however beyond that for long term players ISK means nothing, AURUM is just real world ISK, and PC is the massive **** waggling contest it was always meant to be.
For Planetside for those who don't know the server is divided up into territories held by the three factions which constantly are lost and gained and actually flow like a battlefield, in Dust we are transported from level to level, all of which are about the size of one Planetside combat zone. In comparison to a game with smoothed out aim and movement, larger maps, and more players what does Dust do that no other game does?
Corporations- That is what keeps me around (not to mention enslaving Minmatar scum). The chance that one day I'll be able to see my whole corp deploy to a single battlefield, or a company of each corporation in the alliance throwing down their best and brightest to fight over terrain in a multi hour match where we are utterly defeated or reign supreme, where the corp can develop players who don't want to enter straight up combat matches all the time and can PvE across half a dozen game modes.
Dust 514 is not ready to be played as a game, but its players are ready. |
